The Kiwanis Club of San Marcos Annual Flag Collection and Retirement Program began in September of 2002 as a way for our club to honor
the memory of the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001 and meet a need within our community at the same time. During the year, as our members drove through
the neighborhoods and business areas of San Marcos and the surrounding communities, we noticed that many of the flags being
flown were no longer crisp and new looking after a year or more weather exposure. And, as we talked to our neighbors
and friends, we found that most people didn't know where to take their worn, torn or faded flags for proper disposal. Since
we sponsor SAN MARCOS CUB SCOUT PACK 662, we knew their merit badge program included
participation in a flag retirement ceremony. Viola! And so began our Flag Collection and Retirement Program! In 2005, we changed the ceremony date back to the Scout's
original event date of Flag Day due to winter weather issues when the event was held in October. Each
year, FROM MAY 10 THROUGH JUNE 10, we place collection boxes throughout San Marcos where
our residents can drop off their old flags when they purchase new ones.
On Flag Day, June 14th, we gather the flags, our members
and families, Cub Scout Pack 662 members and their families and invite the public and local dignitaries to join us as we provide
a proper and dignified retirement ceremony for flags that have proudly flown in San Marcos. Our local DAR
Rancho Buena Vista Chapter members also collect flags and join us for this special event. Our Annual Flag
Collection and Retirement Program collects an average of 750-800 flags each year!
Please
feel welcome to join us this year at 6:30 pm on Flag Day, June 14th, at Walnut Grove Park in San Marcos.
