 Give the Gift of Sight!
| S . O. S . SAVE OLD SPECTACLES
|
| For more than 30 years, the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos has participated in
an ongoing community service program to provide people in third world countries with the gift of sight. We gather
donated old spectacles from the community and then package and send them to Direct Relief International in Santa Barbara
to be cleaned, repaired and check for reading. They are then sent overseas to those that need them.
We average between 500-1,000 pairs of glasses each year! We hope you'll consider donating your old eyeglasses next time you get a new set.
Eyeglasses can be dropped off at Wal Mart (Optometry Dept) at 732 Center Drive,
Minuteman Press at 277 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road Suite H or at the San Marcos Senior Center, 111 Richmar Avenue. | To learn more about , CLICK HERE |
History
In
1967 Dr. Sutter Kunkel, a Long Beach optometrist, originated this international Kiwanis cause in order to fulfill a need for
eyeglasses in less-developed areas of the world. Due to malnutrition, poor vision is common in most underdeveloped countries,
and eyeglasses are essential to performing everyday tasks such as working in the fields, cooking or sewing.
| How S.O.S.
Works
All types of prescription
eyeglasses are needed. Any size or shape of men's, women's and children's glasses are recyclable and can be used
if they are unbroken and are still in a sound frame.
Working with the Mercy Ships International, the glasses are
professionally graded as per the prescription and then processed for distribution through their world wide humanitarian program
bringing sight to thousands of challenged people around the world.
